What is Photodynamic Therapy?
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a special treatment in which a topical agent applied to the skin is activated by a light source. PDT treatment involves the use of a naturally occurring substance called ALA (aminolevulinic acid) which when applied to the skin is absorbed and converted to a natural photosensitive product. This is then activated by the application of a special wavelength light.
What sort of light is used?
A blue wavelength light source is used. Blue light sources do not have harmful effects on the skin. This is not ultraviolet light or x-rays so it does not have any adverse effects on the skin.
How does PDT treat Acne?
When the topical agent ALA is applied to the skin it is preferentially absorbed by the acne bacteria and sebaceous glands in the skin making them photosensitive. When the blue light source is subsequently applied to the skin the bacteria are destroyed and the sebaceous glands are reduced.
Who can have PDT?
PDT can be used in all skin types and age groups. PDT can be used on all parts of the body, but the face is the commonest site.
Even though there is no evidence of complications we will not perform this treatment if you are pregnant or breast feeding. You will also not be able to have PDT treatment if you have the rare condition of porphyria, have taken Roaccutane medication in the previous 6 months, have a history of keloid scarring or photosensitivity.
How many treatments?
PDT acne treatments typically consist of 3 treatments performed once a month, followed by maintenance as required.
Are there side effects?
PDT makes the skin very sensitive to sunlight for 48 hours after treatment so avoiding sunlight and the use of sunscreens are essential to avoid being sunburnt. Immediately after treatment there may be some redness and slight swelling, your skin may feel like mild sunburn. The skin might feel dry and tightened and there may be some peeling usually in the first week. The treated area may be slightly red for 1-2 weeks.
What are the advantages?
The use of PDT avoids the potential side effects of other medical acne treatments such as long term oral antibiotics and medications such as Roaccutane. PDT is a well tolerated procedure involving minimal discomfort and is easily performed in our speciality clinic environment.
PDT is non-invasive (no needles or surgery required) and the vast majority of patients are delighted with the outcome.
Can PDT treat other conditions?
PDT can also be used to treat sundamaged skin and other skin conditions such as sebaceous gland hyperplasia.
