Information on Fraxel laser

At the Cosmetic & Laser Medical Centre we can now take our treatment capabilities to the next level with the FRAXEL laser system.  The FRAXEL is what is called a fractional laser.  Compared with earlier ablative laser systems the FRAXEL has enhanced technology that enables shorter treatment times, lower costs, less discomfort and much reduced down time.  This means the FRAXEL technology represents significant advantages to patients seeking corrective laser treatment for scars, wrinkles, blemishes or overall facial rejuvenation.

How do fractional lasers work?

Fractional lasers treat the skin with enhanced micro-pulses of light which stimulate new collagen production.  Fractional lasers target multiple tiny cones of skin tissue whilst leaving areas of normal tissue between the cones unaffected.  This has the huge benefit of combining very effective treatment with very rapid healing.

Why the FRAXEL fractional laser?

The FRAXEL uses the 1550nm wavelength which has the optimum absorption coefficient for water in both epidermal and dermal tissue providing efficient energy delivery with depth penetration ranging from 400 to 1400 microns.

The FRAXEL laser has a safe and proven record with more than 3000 doctors worldwide having treated over 70,000 patients.

What can the FRAXEL treat?

The FRAXEL laser is specifically designed to treat acne scarring and in correcting signs of ageing, sun-damage, fine lines and wrinkles.  Also excellent results can be achieved on surgical scars and certain stretchmarks.  The FRAXEL also treats the discolouration associated with ageing skin that results in age and sunspots as well as the hormonal pigmentation of melasma.

The use of lasers such as the FRAXEL for skin rejuvenation is one of the most sought after skin treatments available today to help people look and feel younger.

How long does a treatment take?

The procedure is performed in our clinic rooms with treatment time dependent on the size of the area being treated, but it typically takes about 30mins.

Does it hurt?

The FRAXEL laser is extremely well tolerated but as it can be felt on the skin it is recommended that a topical anaesthetic cream is applied before treatment to minimise any discomfort.

What happens after treatment?

Because the procedure does not remove the outer skin layer you can resume normal activities soon after treatment.  The skin typically has a pinkish colour for 5-7 days after treatment.  If swelling occurs it is usually minor and generally resolves in about 2 days.

How many treatments are necessary?

The number of treatments varies with the problem being treated and the level of improvement required.  Typically a series of 3-5 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart produces optimal results.  As collagen is being stimulated the results are progressive with noticeable beneficial effects accumulating over several months after each treatment.
