Treatment of spider veins

What are spider veins?

Spider veins or 'telangiectasias' are small, thin blood vessels that lie close to the surface of the skin and may appear red or blue. These small, enlarged blood vessels may be short, unconnected lines or may be connected in a spider web or cluster pattern. Spider veins can cover a large area of skin and be quite unattractive. They are most common in the thighs, ankles and feet.

How are spider veins assessed?

The choice of which treatment is best for an individual may vary depending on a number of factors including the size and position of the spider veins and whether there are any underlying blood flow or reflux problems.

The most appropriate method of treatment requires evaluation by a properly qualified medical practitioner.  The latest ultrasound based Doppler and colour flow Duplex ultrasounds are used to help in assessing the exact nature of any venous problem and identifying the best treatment plan for each individual patient.

What are the treatment options?

Spider veins are usually treated by either sclerotherapy (For more information see Sclerotherapy) or by laser treatment (For more information see Vein Laser Treatment)

What if I have both spider and varicose veins?

Generally to achieve the best results any underlying deep vein or larger vein problem needs to be managed before treating more superficial veins.
